Whatever happens at Hampden on Sunday, spare us any guff about “most successful” club
Andrew H in advance of this week's two big games
There are those among our Celtic fanbase who insist Europe is now where it is at for the club. The domestic domain has been conquered so comprehensively that it is the continental arena where it really counts for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
I beg to differ. To the extent, indeed, that if granted only one Celtic win across the next week, I’d happily sacrifice Champions League success away to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday for a resounding League Cup final triumph over Rangers on Sunday. In a heartbeat. But not so that there a boast made by the poor unfortunates that follow the Ibrox club could be capable of being turned on them.
Of course, it would be delicious for Celtic to be sitting on 119 major honours by the end of the Premier Cup showdown. One more than the 118 that they and the Rangers entities have accumulated. It would be brilliant to rip the knitting big-style - as has been irresistible in recent years - os a consequence of their ‘most successful club in the world’ proclamations being firmly kicked to the kerb. But that billing was always naff, and just plain daft. And it would be regrettable if any among our own fanbase see this ‘most successful’ term as one to be attached to Celtic. Run, run, run a mile from it.
