Third strips, camouflage and badges
We don't love the nonsense marketing folk use to explain colours
The new Celtic 3rd kit has been released today. Interesting to note that it has the traditional (traditional since the last time we changed it) club badge meaning that the Four Leaf Clover only badge has been promoted from 3rd kit badge to 2nd kit bad - I wonder if it will make to the ‘Podium” by the end of the adidas contract?
Two questions that spring to mind when I look at our badges - what was the thinking behind changing from a shamrock to a four leaf clover? And what are the squiggles that look a bit like a kids drawing of a bat?
Anyway…onto the new 3rd kit.
In recent times we’ve had the strip that was inspired by the colours on the tickets for the 1967 European Cup Final, a strip inspired by the stain glass window inside Celtic Park and a strip inspired by the Magners logo. So this one? No, it’s not inspired by the outfits on the Bogside, nor is it inspired by the facemasks of the Green Brigade, apparently… “The adidas jersey is a tribute to Celtic FC's steadfast Home support throughout the decades, and is clad in a camouflage-style graphic inspired by a sea of fan flags and scarves, to mark 30 years since the end of terracing at Celtic Park.”
Now I was there for The Jungle’s Last Stand - Blow Away The Blues. It was rubbish -
and I don’t recall anyone wearing army fatigues. I was also there for the first day of the new stadium 29 years ago and again, I saw no-one dressed like a Gurkha (but then again, maybe the camouflage was so good I didn’t see them).
Anyway, as I often say, kits are not for middle aged men. What matters is do the yoof like them and do they want to wear them and the proof will be in the pudding.
It’s a very similar shade to the hats scarfs and jackets foundly adourned (in a non-conformist uniform way) by the Green Brigade so maybe they’ll admire the “moisture-managing AEROREADY makes the shirt perfect for keeping fans and players comfortable.” They’ll also no doubt appreciate that “The stylish top is made with 100% recycled materials and looks great alongside a classic casual outfit, or dressed up for a cool, fashion-forward look.”
Anyway - here’s some pictures.
