Today was the Celtic AGM. I have lost track of how many I have attended but certainly remember going when we had it in the Celtic End stand (whichever one that is) and they built a platform at the bottom for the board. Yes, it was outside, Brian Quinn was chair and it was so long ago Dermot attended!
My first #AGM was over 20yrs ago and I’ve been breaking the rules and live tweeting for at least a decade. It’s harder than you think. You’re not supposed to do it, so I’m always choosing a seat, middle of the room and middle of the aisle. Also, some parts race along and so I’m using my thumbs on the smart phone whilst I try and listen, summarise and get the quote as accurate as possible and all in around 200 characters.
After live tweeting so many, we had the dilemma of tweeting, blueskying or Substacking the AGM. Despite the recent exodus of Tims from Twitter to Bluesky, we still retain more followers on that platform than the others. Consequently I did two live videos on Substack and then took over the celticrumours twitter feed and live tweeted as usual.
Reading back on replies to tweets from others at the AGM, I am reminded of a truism I say at work - 90% of people do not understand the general public. It’s a public meeting and the press will pick up on any comment. Also, we are a plc and cannot go making off the cuff statements without board review and approval and so everything will be guarded. But that doesn’t mean it’s a waste of time. You can often pick up nuance and general direction of travel by what is not said or answered or when there is a lukewarm response. No named individuals will be thrown under a bus and so if there are any concerns about the ability of key personnel, there’s zero chance of that being directly stated.
Taking all of this into consideration, none of the following was said and much of this is based upon listening to responses from a reasonably informed position but for me there were some clear takeaways from today:
