There are innumerable reasons to mourn the Celtic departure of Kyogo Furuhashi.
Electric eels would be envious of the extraordinary movement of the now Rennes striker. Children’s TV presenters at their mugging best couldn’t begin to mimic the joie de vivre that flowed naturally from the elfin Japanese predator. A player for every occasion but especially the history-altering ones, the sheer variety and monumental value of his goalscoring moments across his three-and-a-half seasons made him a generational talent in the hoops.
No less than a thrill-ride of a footballer to watch as unwaveringly knocked his pan in, and knocked over opponents, for our club. Frankly, few performers in my Celtic supporting-lifetime have given me such untold pleasure. I had to lock up the whisky and the revolver reading, over-and-over again, his eye-popping numbers detailing his stupendous contribution: 137 starts, 28 sub appearances, 85 goals, 23 assists, 30 match winners, eight derby strikes - seven in a calendar year, as no other Celtic player has achieved - five cup final strikes, and eight net-bulging moments in Europe. I do read and weep.
