Replacing a £27m midfielder who had scored 19 goals and 18 assists in his final season in a Celtic jersey was always going to be a tricky task. Becoming the club's record signing was always going to carry with it a fair weight of expectation. Making your debut against Rangers 24 hours after you arrive in Scotland could be seen as quite demanding. Having to do all of that before you had turned 21 years of age needs a particular type of mentality.
That's probably why we spent £11m on the young Belgian. An incredible sum for Celtic to shell out and one that had Desmond reaching for the angina tablets.
